Roads
The Township of Frontenac Islands is responsible for all municipal roads year-round through its Public Works crew. This maintenance does not include private lanes. Some roads are classified as seasonal roads and are not maintained during the winter months.
The roads are regularly monitored to meet the Minimum Maintenance Standards for municipal highways. The crew identifies and addresses temporary hazards, such as downed trees, branches, potholes, snow, snow drifts, icy conditions, and more. If you see a problem please contact one of the offices.

Entranceway Permits\Driveways
Putting in a driveway? Properties on Township roads require an Entrance Permit for new or additional entranceways, or when altering an existing entranceway. This can also include a temporary construction entrance.
Road Construction and Closures
- Roads are one of the Township’s biggest assets. The goal is to extend the life of our road assets where possible and to renew or rebuild where necessary.
- We are working towards the completion of surface treatment and also addressing culvert replacements, pulverizing, reconstruction, patching, etc.
- The Public Works Department is committed to multi-year road reconstruction projects and taking a long-term approach to allow for planned maintenance and improvements.
- Please note projects may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, such as weather and other issues.
The Township asks that drivers plan their routes accordingly and obey all signs and traffic controls in work zones to ensure the safety of workers.
Snowplowing and Winter Maintenance
- The Roads Department works hard to ensure safe driving conditions on Township roads during the winter.
- If you don’t see a snow plow don’t assume that they are not out. With the total number of kilometres to be cleared the equipment can not be everywhere at once.
- ONTARIO regulation 239/02 determines the classification of Municipal Roads. Efforts are made to ensure winter maintenance of roads exceeds the provincial minimum set standards.
How can you help?
Please…
- be patient, in heavy snowfalls it takes us longer to get all our roads cleared.
- put waste and recycling bins in your driveway and not on the road allowance.
- pile snow on the right side of your driveway, this is the down-side of the plow so it will help to reduce snow build-up in your driveway
- slow down-drive according to the weather and road conditions. Drive with care!
Please do not…
- park on the road/street during a snowfall, or immediately following a snowfall if plowing is still needed
- do not follow too closely to snow plows
- place snow from driveways on the road/street, this creates a hazard for vehicles and is prohibited by the Highway Traffic Act
During snowplowing, the force of plowed snow often knocks down unstable mailboxes. Please ensure that your mailbox is fit to withstand the pressure of heavy loads of snow spray from our plows. Mailboxes, like other household features, require maintenance to endure our winter months. The Township does not replace mailboxes knocked down by snow spray. If you believe your property was struck or run over by a Township vehicle, please report it.
Road Encroachment
The Township Road allowance extends beyond the shoulders of the road surface. Permission must be obtained from the Township before placing any object or structure on a road allowance. Please contact the Municipal Office to confirm the placement of your structure or object.
