Call Before You Start!

Planning a project? Call before you start!

Err on the side of caution and contact the building department to make sure you have the necessary building or demolition permits and that your project meets Ontario Building Code standards.

The Building Department is responsible for ensuring that all construction in the Municipality meets the required standards outlined in the Ontario Building Code, the Municipality's zoning by-laws and other applicable laws and regulations.

The building permit process ensures these requirements are met to protect the interests of homeowners, developers and the community.

A building permit is a license granting legal permission to begin construction of any new structure, addition or renovation.

Permit Review Process

Applications are processed as quickly as possible, depending on the complexity and completeness of the applicant's drawings and information and if referral to other departments is required.

Changes must be approved before a permit can be issued in the case of a zoning change, minor variance, or if building plans must be altered. Upon approval, construction must proceed as stated in the review process.

Inspections are conducted by the Building Inspector at each major phase of construction and ensure the project is carried out according to the Building Code, the Building Permit and the approved building plans.

Each inspection must be requested with 24 hours' notice given to the Building Inspector. If the work does not conform to approved plans or the building code, the owner will be notified.

If a violation is deemed serious enough, the Building Inspector may post a stop-work order until the issue is fixed. If work on the project continues, legal action may be taken against the builder/owner.
